Mind Over Muscle, Can Your Thoughts Make You Build Muscle Mass?
ByHave you ever thought about the concept of mind over muscle? I’m sure you’ve heard of the placebo effect where someone is in need of medicine but is given a placebo, or fake medicine, and told it’s the real deal. Usually right after getting this “medicine,” the patient actually experiences the desired result of what they thought was medicine.
The active ingredient here is that the patient’s belief. They actually thought they were getting the medicine and had full faith that they were going to be healed, cured, or set at ease because of it. Regardless of what was put in the patient’s body, the brain was told, by the mind, that it was going to work. It was basically the person’s faith in the medicine that cured them. Even Jesus Christ said that when you believe in something with full faith, you can move mountains. His disciple Peter even walked on water because of his faith.
Mind Over Muscle, The Placebo Effect So what does the Placebo Effect have to do with gaining muscle? It has everything to do with it! Everything that happens in the body, has to first go through the brain. We can control our brain by our thoughts, with our minds. It looks like this:
1. Our thoughts indirectly control our brains 2. Our brains directly control our bodies 3. Our body gains muscle, if the brain tells it to.
Placebo patients think they are getting the real thing and that they will be healed, and they usually are. It works the same with supplements, people believe they will help build muscle, and some do, usually because of the user’s belief that it will work. It’s usually not the supplement that is working, it’s their mind. Their mind is telling their brain that the supplement IS working and that they will gain muscle because of it.
When this happens, your mind is telling your brain what’s going to happen, and your brain does all it can to make it happen. Guess what, your brain is in charge of gaining muscle, if it wants too, you will gain muscle.
Make the Most of It: You don’t have to consume a bucket load of powder from a flashy, expensive, half full tub of “Miracle Muscle 2000.” You just have to believe in yourself. The placebo effect generally works when you don’t know that what you are taking isn’t the real thing. Basically, it works with blind ignorance.
The major premise of the placebo effect is that you KNEW something would work. You would be limitless if you could KNOW that you would gain muscle whenever you did something you were supposed to. You can know this, you just have to choose to do so. Here are a few things you can do to put your mind over muscle and use your mind’s ability to build muscle:
1. Pre Workout- KNOW that your workout WILL add another layer of strong, ripped muscle 2. During Workout – KNOW that with each rep and set you are forcing tons of muscle stimulation and that you will get huge 3. Post Workout – Feel great about the workout and KNOW that you just sparked tons of muscle growth, and look forward to the next training session knowing that you will be building even more muscle.
You need to actually think about what you do to help you gain muscle. You need to realize how every bite of nutritious food is helping you gain muscle. Realize how every hour of sleep is adding more muscle and helping recovery. Basically, every muscle building activity needs to be coupled with positive thoughts about how it will help you gain mass.
Gaining muscle is a physical thing, but it’s also a mental thing. Your brain does what your mind tells it to do, and your mind is constantly giving your brain instructions, whether you know it or not. Give good instructions, and make it known that you WILL gain huge amounts of muscle, and prepare to be amazed!
